Privacy Policy

1. Our Approach to Privacy

Show Up! Missoula is a community event listing platform operated by Future Tense Collective. We believe you should be able to discover local events without being tracked, profiled, or surveilled. This policy explains exactly what data we collect, what we use it for, and what we don’t do — in plain language.

The short version: we don’t use cookies, we don’t track you across websites, we don’t sell your data, and we don’t run advertising networks. If that’s enough for you, great. Read on for the details.

2. What We Collect

2.1 Event Submissions

When you submit an event through our submission form, we collect:

  • Event details: title, description, date/time, location, image, and any links you provide. These are used to create the public event listing.
  • Organizer email: so we can follow up if we have questions about your event. This is never displayed publicly.

All submissions are reviewed by our team before publishing. Events are stored as drafts in our content management system until approved.

2.2 Newsletter

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address. That’s it. We use it to send you updates about FTC projects, calls for action, community initiatives, and occasionally help promote Show Up! Missoula events. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link in every email.

2.3 What We Don’t Collect

To be explicit about what we don’t do:

  • We don’t set cookies of any kind
  • We don’t track you across websites
  • We don’t collect personal data from event browsers — you never need an account to use this site
  • We don’t use advertising networks or ad trackers
  • We don’t sell, rent, or share your data with anyone
  • We don’t build user profiles or behavioral models

3. Analytics

We use Simple Analytics to understand how people use our site. Simple Analytics is a privacy-first analytics service that:

  • Does not use cookies
  • Does not collect personal data or IP addresses
  • Does not track users across websites
  • Is fully GDPR compliant without requiring a consent banner

What it does collect: aggregate page view counts, referrer sources (which site linked you here), browser type, and screen size — all without identifying individual visitors. We use this to understand which events get the most interest and how people find our site.

4. Bot Protection

Our event submission form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to prevent automated spam submissions. Turnstile is an invisible challenge that runs in the background to distinguish humans from bots.

How it works: Turnstile uses techniques including canvas fingerprinting to verify that a real person is submitting an event. This happens only on the submission page and only after you start interacting with the form — simply visiting the page does not trigger it.

What it doesn’t do: Turnstile does not track you across websites, does not set cookies, and does not build a profile of you. The verification result is used once to confirm you’re human and then discarded.

5. Service Providers

We use the following services to operate Show Up! Missoula. We chose each one for its respect for user privacy:

  • Netlify — hosts our website. Netlify processes incoming web requests through its CDN, which may temporarily log IP addresses for security and performance purposes per their privacy policy.
  • Sanity — our content management system where event listings are stored. Event data (titles, descriptions, images, dates) lives in Sanity. No visitor data is collected by Sanity.
  • Resend — delivers our newsletter emails and internal notification emails. Resend processes email addresses solely for delivery purposes.
  • Cloudflare — provides Turnstile bot protection on the submission form, as described in Section 4.
  • Simple Analytics — privacy-first website analytics, as described in Section 3.

We do not share your data with any other third parties. None of these providers receive data beyond what is necessary for their specific function.

6. Structured Data for Search Engines

Our event pages include schema.org/Event structured data (JSON-LD) to help search engines understand and display event information. This is static metadata embedded in the page — it does not execute any code, set cookies, or make requests to external services. It contains only publicly visible event information (title, date, location, image) and no personal data.

7. Data Retention

  • Newsletter subscriptions: your email address is retained until you unsubscribe.
  • Event submissions: event listing data (title, description, dates, location, image) is retained as long as the listing is useful to the community. Organizer email addresses are anonymized 60 days after the event ends — the event listing may remain for archival purposes, but your personal contact information is deleted.
  • Analytics data: Simple Analytics retains aggregate, non-personal statistics. No individual visitor data is stored.

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access: ask what data we hold about you.
  • Correction: request we fix inaccurate information.
  • Deletion: request we delete your data. For newsletter subscribers, you can unsubscribe at any time. For event submitters, contact us and we’ll remove your information.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the information in Section 10.

9. Children's Privacy

Show Up! Missoula is a public event listing site. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Since browsing events requires no account or personal information, children can safely browse the site. The event submission form is intended for event organizers.
